Alan Oliveira, an integrated member of LASIGE, delivered an invited talk at the NATO Science for Peace and Security Advanced Training Course (SPS ATC) on Autonomous Sea Navigation. The course took place in Georgia from September 28 to October 4, 2025.
This training course focuses on the interdisciplinary approach required to address the challenges associated with Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS). It incorporates various technologies, including machine learning, sensor integration, remote control, and cybersecurity modules. Professionals in the maritime field must learn to effectively utilise these technologies to adapt to innovations in transportation and security.
The talk addressed the growing cyber threats to cyber-physical systems (CPS), with a particular focus on maritime CPS, including ships, naval infrastructures, and unmanned drones. Alan Oliveira also presented a simulation system under development at LASIGE by a team including Pedro Ferreira, José Cecílio, and Luís Pinto, alongside MSc students Luís Sousa and Henrique Catarino.
The simulation system is designed to study cyberattacks and defence mechanisms in CPS environments, including drone applications. It aims to support both research and training efforts in the field of cybersecurity.
