Alan Oliveira, LASIGE integrated member, commented on the Radio France International (RFI), as an IT security specialist, as an IT security expert, on the alleged attack on the GPS system of the aircraft carrying Von der Leyen, President of the European Commission:
“Interference in this GPS sector, in an aircraft or even in a vessel, greatly affects operations. For this reason, we also seek to have other alternative ways to continue navigation, either through the use of maps or, to a certain extent, by relying on initial navigators”.
And added “For some time to come, it will still be possible to navigate or use these sensors to maintain navigation or, eventually, use other systems. Of course, these are alternatives that attempt to mitigate the problem, but in fact, interference causes disruption and, depending on the conditions, whether it be air traffic, visibility or even these other alternative options, they can be degraded and this increases the risk”.
The Bulgarian authorities suspected deliberate action on the part of Russia but the incident is under investigation.
