Tiago Guerreiro’s opinion in Expresso newspaper

Date: 10/02/2026

Tiago Guerreiro, LASIGE Director and integrated member, wrote an opinion piece in the Expresso newspaper on 12 February 2026 about education and the challenge of teaching in a world with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools.

In the piece, Guerreiro notes that Generative AI has entered education abruptly, exposing outdated assessment methods and that Institutions often respond with prohibition and surveillance rather than pedagogical reform.

He adds that if AI can complete an academic assignment, the problem is the assignment, not the student. The real issue is a system built on predictable essays rather than critical thinking. Therefore, Universities must teach when to trust, when to doubt, and when to avoid AI, cultivating critical thinking above all. In fields like computer engineering, syntax learning is replaceable, but system design, responsibility, and sociotechnical understanding are not.

Tiago Guerreiro highlights that, despite slow institutional change, ignoring AI will harm universities more than adapting to it. Higher education must decide whether to reinvent learning or become a “museum” of old evaluation practices.
