Title: Optimizing Research on Portugal’s Supercomputing Infrastructure: A Practical Guide

Speaker: Bernardo Malaca (CNCA)
Date: March 16, 2026, 12h
Where: C6.3.27
Invited by: Vinicius Cogo
(coffee break included)

Abstract: As computational demands in research grow, moving beyond local hardware becomes essential. This presentation provides a practical roadmap for leveraging Portugal’s supercomputing infrastructure, specifically focusing on the Deucalion (Minho) and MareNostrum 5 (Barcelona) clusters. We will begin by introducing the technical capabilities of these platforms before giving some tips for faster access to resources. We will focus on software installation, how to submit and manage jobs on CPU clusters versus GPU clusters using SLURM, and how to access Deucalion directly from your browser window (and open e.g. jupyter or RStudio sessions).

Bio: Bernardo Malaca holds a PhD in Physics Engineering from IST, Lisbon. He has provided technical support for researchers on supercomputers including LUMI, MareNostrum 5, and Deucalion since 2018. Having been involved with CNCA (National Center for Advanced Computing) and Deucalion since its initial pilot phase 1.5 years ago, he now leads the cluster’s user support team.
