The paper “From Board to Screen and Back: Exploring Continuous Transmedial Play”, co-authored by LASIGE researchers Inês Gil, David Gonçalves, João Guerreiro, and André Rodrigues has been accepted for publication at the Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction, a top-ranked journal. The work will also be presented at the Annual Symposium on Computer-Human Interaction in Play (CHI PLAY 2026), which will take place in York, United Kingdom, from November 2 to 5.
The work explores a novel hybrid approach in which players can engage in medium-specific play sessions (i.e., physical and digital play sessions), while preserving a sense of continuity between them. This paper presents a proof-of-concept prototype and a qualitative study with 16 gamers, and examines how gameplay, social dynamics, and progression unfolded across mediums. The findings highlight key considerations when designing for continuity in transmedial play, including its potential to support flexible progression, and keep players engaged over time.
A preprint version of the paper is available.
