Tiago Guerreiro, LASIGE integrated member and current Director, received an unrestricted research gift from Google to support his work on AI literacy for children with visual impairments.

Tiago Guerreiro’s research focuses on the co-creation of inclusive educational tools and methods that teach children with visual impairments the foundational principles of data science and machine learning. This work is particularly important as machine learning begins to make its way into K-12 education. Without proper adaptations, children with visual impairments risk being excluded from these progresses and face yet another cycle of inaccessible solutions and delayed adaptations.

The goal of his team is to enable children with visual impairments to engage meaningfully with AI concepts such as classification, model training, and algorithmic bias through experimentation. The project will foster critical thinking and collaboration, preparing children for a world where AI and data literacy are increasingly essential skills. Ultimately, this work seeks to redefine what accessible STEM education can achieve by focusing on inclusion, creativity, and practical understanding in a context that is still underdeveloped both for sighted and blind children.
