The paper “Alternative modalities for visually impaired users to control smart TVs”, co-authored by LASIGE's Daniel Costa and Carlos Duarte researchers, was published at Multimedia Tools and Applications, a top-ranked journal.

Nowadays, smart TVs, through their offering of interactive features, create a new set of challenges for visually impaired users. The paper presents the results of a user study where blind participants used different modalities to control a Smart TV through a mobile application. The study considered the impact of the user experience and the system performance and found touch and speech to be the most efficient modalities.
