The paper "Boolean Searchable Symmetric Encryption with Filters on Trusted Hardware", co-authored by Bernardo Ferreira (LASIGE integrated researcher) and other researchers (Bernardo Portela, Tiago Oliveira, Guilherme Borges, Henrique Domingos and João Leitão) has been published at IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing, a top-ranked journal (h5-index 54).
The paper proposes BISEN, a new provably-secure encryption scheme for database cloud deployments that allows boolean queries to be performed directly over encrypted data without having to decrypt it. This is achieved in an efficient and scalable way by exploring the natural synergy between standard cryptographic primitives and modern attestation-based trusted hardware, deployed as a remote trust anchor in the cloud. BISEN supports arbitrarily complex boolean queries with multiple conjunctions, disjunctions and negations, as well as filter functions on search results based on generic metadata created by the users.
Early Access to the paper is provided on IEEE Xplore.
