The paper “State Machine Replication for the Masses with BFT-SMaRt” was awarded the Test-of-Time Award at the 54th IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks, held in Brisbane, Australia, in June 2024. Alysson Bessani was there to receive the award for the work he co-authored.
This award, instituted in 2019, recognises the paper(s) published 10 years ago at DSN that had a significant impact on the community on the theory and/or practice of dependable systems and networks computing research.
This paper, published in 2014, describes the BFT-SMaRt replication library, which is extensively cited as a reference design for Byzantine-resilient systems and is used in many projects around the world. It was co-authored by João Sousa (a former LASIGE/FCUL PhD student and researcher) and Eduardo Alchieri (a former visiting researcher at LASIGE and a professor at University of Brasilia).
Alysson Bessani was honoured with the same award for a different paper in 2021.
