ArchiveChain project featured in Tek Notícias

Date: 17/10/2025

Bernardo Ferreira, an integrated researcher at LASIGE and a member of the ArchiveChain team, explained to TEK Notícias how the project originated and how the blockchain operates. The blockchain uses pages from Arquivo.pt as a kind of “fuel”, which ultimately contributes to the preservation of the history of the Portuguese web.

ArchiveChain aims to establish a standard of sustainability by being energetically efficient and self-sustaining. Anyone interested in participating can join as long as they have sufficient disk space on their computer to store the pages. Participants can earn rewards in the form of a cryptocurrency created by the project.

This work was developed as part of a Master’s thesis in Computer Engineering by LASIGE’s MSc student Bruno Cotrim, under the scientific guidance of Bernardo Ferreira and Miguel Matos from the Instituto Superior Técnico. The project received an honourable mention in the Arquivo.pt 2025 Awards, given by the DNS.PT Association, in Jun 2025.
