LASIGE integrated researcher Cátia Pesquita recently authored an opinion article published in Tek Notícias, on 11 November 2025, where she explores the challenges and opportunities Europe faces in the global race for Artificial Intelligence (AI). In the article, Pesquita notes that the current AI landscape is largely dominated by major players from the US and China, whose leadership is supported by three key factors: vast computational resources, unprecedented volumes of data, and a strong ability to attract highly qualified talent. According to Pesquita, Europe will not be able to compete directly with these powers solely based on scale. Instead, she advocates for a differentiated strategy centered on quality, specialization, and the sustainability of AI research.
The article also highlights the essential role of universities and research centers in shaping this strategy. Pesquita emphasizes the importance of investing in pioneering areas that may not yield immediate returns but have significant scientific and societal impact. She further points out that the boundary between fundamental research and commercial innovation is porous, with advances in basic research often leading to substantial economic benefits.
