LASIGE research in International Journal of Human-Computer Studies

Date: 28/05/2025

The paper “Investigating crossmodal correspondences between vibrotactile stimuli, colour, and emotions”, authored by LASIGE integrated member Isabel Neto was published in the top 10% journal International Journal of Human-Computer Studies. The paper was written in collaboration with Isabel Soares (IST, ITI/Larsys), Ana Paiva (IST, INESC), and  Hugo Nicolau (IST, ITI/Larsys).
The paper explores crossmodal correspondences by investigating the relationship between colour and emotional associations with pure vibrotactile stimuli. As interest grows in understanding how multiple sensory modalities interact and influence each other, the research aims to inform the design of interfaces that seamlessly integrate different sensory experiences and emotional states.
Results showed that participant’s perceptions of pleasure and arousal increased with amplitude and frequency, but negative and relaxing emotional states were not effectively conveyed. Additionally, we found distinct associations between vibrotactile stimuli and colour properties. The paper also introduces a design space to guide future designers in creating richer multisensory experiences.
