LASIGE researchers Nuno M. Rodrigues, recently PhD graduated, and Sara Silva, integrated member, have published the article “Impact of Scanner Manufacturer, Endorectal Coil Use, and Clinical Variables on Deep Learning-assisted Prostate Cancer Classification Using Multiparametric MRI” in the Radiology: Artificial Intelligence journal, a top 10% journal.
The publication demonstrates that scanner manufacturers and scan protocol have a substantial impact on the performance of classification models to classify aggressiveness of prostate cancer on bi-parametric MRI scans.
It also shows that this effect can be mitigated when models are trained on data similar to that used during testing, getting a performance boost when using heterogenous data, and feature distribution is largely affected by scanner manufacturer and scan protocol.
