National Scientific Culture Day

Date: 24/11/2025

The National Scientific Culture Day was created in 1996 by the then Minister of Science and Technology, José Mariano Gago. The date chosen, 24 November, is a tribute to the date of birth of Rómulo Vasco da Gama Carvalho (1906-1997), a prominent science communicator in Portugal, who was also a poet under the pseudonym António Gedeão. This day is an opportunity to celebrate the importance of scientific knowledge and its role in the development of society.

It also seeks to inspire the population to engage with scientific knowledge, promoting innovation and technological progress in the country. Through educational events and outreach initiatives, the date strengthens the link between the scientific community and society, actively participating in the advancement of knowledge.

One of LASIGE’s most recent initiatives in promoting scientific culture, particularly within its team but open to the entire community, has been the fortnightly LASIGE Talks, on noteworthy scientific work.
