Date: 12/11/2024

Pedro Ferreira, LASIGE integrated member, was the guest on the 90 Segundos de Ciência podcast, on 11 November 2024, talking about the European project SATO, of which he is the coordinator, with the aim of developing a platform to support the assessment of the energy performance of buildings.

The SATO project is developing methodologies and tools to be applied to a digital platform that can run on public or private servers and which aims to support property managers in assessing the energy performance and optimizing the energy efficiency of their buildings.

One of the ways this platform contributes to assessing the energy performance of buildings is by modelling their behavior, assessing it in the present and project the future.

This modelling can be developed on the basis of physical models that explain the processes of energy transfer and flow within the building, but which deal poorly with uncertainties associated with the dynamics of the building itself: whether it has more or fewer occupants, whether the doors are open or the windows are closed.

To solve this problem, Pedro Ferreira’s team is designing hybrid models based on machine learning algorithms that deal with the dynamics of the building and the uncertainties caused by it, and which work in parallel with simple data-based models that deal better with these uncertainties.

These projections will help managers make decisions to achieve better energy performance in their buildings.
