LASIGE Talks are fortnightly/monthly events to publicize recently distinguished publications or ongoing cutting-edge work by researchers from the research centre, consolidating the scientific culture of the LASIGE community.
Speakers: Miguel Silva (LASIGE) and Carlos Duarte (LASIGE/FCUL)
Date: June 11th, 2025, Wednesday

Talk1: Cutting Through The Noise: Explaining Residuals In Multivariate Time Series With Motif Analysis
Speaker: Miguel Silva
Modeling real-world system dynamics is challenging due to irregular, context-driven patterns that standard models, including deep learning, struggle to capture, especially without external context. This work introduces a methodology to decompose multivariate time series residuals into statistically significant, interpretable events. By extending motif discovery to irregular patterns, we enable robust, domain-aware detection of non-trivial, multi-dimensional behaviors. Validated across health, energy, and mobility data, our approach reveals up to 50% of hidden dynamics in real systems.
Talk2: The Mind’s Dashboard: Cognitive Load Detection Using Multi-Modal Physiological Signals
Speaker: Carlos Duarte
What if computers could tell when you’re struggling with a math problem versus being distracted by bad interface design? This talk unveils the “mind’s dashboard” – a system using eye tracking and biometrics to distinguish different types of cognitive overload. Discover how pupil oscillations, attention patterns, and heart rate create objective measures of mental state, enabling adaptive systems that respond intelligently to human cognitive limits.
