World Braille Day and Artificial Intelligence

Date: 06/01/2026

World Braille Day, celebrated annually on January 4 and established by the United Nations in 2019, raises awareness of the Braille system and underscores its vital role in enabling communication and the full realization of human rights for people who are blind or partially sighted. Braille stands as a powerful symbol of literacy, independence, and inclusion.

In an increasingly digital world, Braille continues to be an indispensable tool for access to information, communication, and active participation in society. With technology continually evolving, the intersection of Braille and Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents promising opportunities to enhance accessibility and inclusion.

Technological innovation can expand the possibilities for Braille reading and writing, driving the creation of inclusive, accessible, and empowering solutions for people with visual impairments.

To further this reflection, the National Institute for Rehabilitation, I.P. (INR), and the Centre for Braille and Complementary Reading Methods, will organize an webinar next January 15, 2026, which aims to:

  • Explore how AI can enhance Braille, automating processes and facilitating the production of accessible materials;
  • Present academic, pedagogical and user perspectives;
  • Discuss future scenarios for a more inclusive society.

Tiago Guerreiro, LASIGE integrated member, was invited to be be part of the panel of experts.
