LASIGE on the organisation of SPLASH’24

Date: 13/11/2024

Several members of LASIGE were in the organization of the top-tier conference SPLASH 2024 – the ACM SIGPLAN International Conference on Systems, Programming, Languages and Applications: Software for Humanity. The conference happened in Pasadena, CA, USA, from October 20 to 25, 2024.

Catarina Gamboa, PhD student at LASIGE, was one of the Volunteer Chairs, responsible for coordinating 40 volunteers who helped run the 6-day conference smoothly. In this role, she managed schedules, assigned tasks, and ensured that volunteers had the information and resources needed to assist attendees and presenters across multiple sessions and locations. This job also included addressing any on-the-ground issues, and troubleshooting logistics as they arose. The experience involved a high level of coordination and adaptability, as she and her team worked to keep the conference atmosphere welcoming and professional, helping attendees get the most out of the event.

Guilherme Espada and Joao Ferreira, PhD and Masters student at LASIGE, respectively, were Audio Video (AV) Chairs for the conference. As AV Chairs, they prepared and managed all AV materials for the conference, streaming talks live, recording them for archival, and assisting with remote and pre-recorded presentations. They facilitated hybrid Q&A sessions, ensuring smooth interactions between in-person and remote participants and delivering a seamless experience for both audiences. However, the AV Chair’s work does not end on the final day of the conference, they are now creating post-conference captioning of the recorded presentations, pushing forward how accessible these resources are. They also oversee the upload of individual presentations, providing presenters and authors an additional platform to share their work and increase its visibility. Their efforts helped create a cohesive, accessible experience for all attendees and preserved valuable content for future reference and learning.

Alcides Fonseca, an integrated researcher at LASIGE, was the Publicity and Web chair, remotely sharing the news and events happening in Pasadena, and maintaining the web resources up to date.
