Top scientists in the Information & Communication Technologies field
Vasco T. Vasconcelos was, for the third year in a row, featured on the list of the top 2% most cited authors throughout his career. Vasconcelos’ research area is Reliable Software Systems.

Nuno Neves is ranked 21st among the top 28 Portuguese researchers in the 9th edition of the Research.com ranking of the best scholars in the field of Computer Science. Neves is also ranked 10th among the top 12 best researchers from the Computer Science field affiliated with the University of Lisbon.
Nuno Neves and Sara Silva were ranked 112th and 130th out of the top 133 scholars from various fields at the University of Lisbon.
Research.com is a platform that provides information on the best scientists, ranked by their D-index which takes into account only publications and citation data for an examined discipline, compiled from various bibliometric data sources. ULisboa/Caixa Geral de Depósitos Scientific Awards 2023
Alysson Bessani was awarded for his work in the Computer Sciences and Informatic Engineering field on the 2023 edition of the ULisboa/Caixa Geral de Depósitos Scientific Awards. It concerns the research developed from 2018 to 2022. The edition results were announced in 2023. Best Paper Award at the 2023 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI23)
The paper “My Zelda Cane: Strategies Used by Blind Players to Play Visual-Centric Digital Games”, co-authored by LASIGE’s PhD students David Gonçalves and Pedro Pais, MSc student Manuel Piçarra, and integrated researchers João Guerreiro and André Rodrigues, was awarded Best Paper Award at the Core A* conference CHI 23. It’s the second consecutive year that LASIGE’s work is awarded. More details here.

1st place in the 22nd edition of the António Gameiro Award
Nuno Cruz was awarded 1st place in the António Gameiro Award. The Portuguese Order of Technical Engineers award aims to promote and enhance the careers of Technical Engineers and Engineers who distinguish themselves among their peers, being the protagonists of a technical-scientific intervention, particularly relevant in the national and international panorama. 2nd place in the Young Inventors Prize
LASIGE’s PhD student Filipa Rocha was awarded 2nd place in the 2023 edition of the Young Inventors Award for developing the project “Block-based Accessible Tangible Programming Systems,” or BATS, that uses tangible blocks to promote inclusive digital learning.
The Young Inventor Prize, awarded by the European Patent Office, recognises initiatives developed by young inventors (aged 30 and under). Open to innovators worldwide, the Young Inventors Prize celebrates solution that work towards the United Nations Sustainable development goals. More details here.

LASIGE PhD students awarded Huawei Seeds for The Future 2.0 scholarships
LASIGE’s PhD students Jéssica Catarino and Nuno Rodrigues were awarded with Huawei Seeds For The Future 2.0 scholarships. The programme Seeds for The Future 2.0 results from a partnership between Huawei Portugal and .PT and aims to empower students in the STEM areas. The 2023 call awarded 50 scholarships, with an acceptance rate of 0,94%. Additional information here.

1st place at the INNCYBER INNOVATION HUB 2022 competition
LASIGE’s MSc student Rúben Barreiro and integrated researcher André Souto won first place in the student’s category of the 3rd edition of Call for Projects do INNCYBER INNOVATION HUB 2022 (Digital Transformation, Cyber an IoT). INNCYBER is an accelerator for fostering innovation on cybersecurity involving Universities, Research Centers, Armed Forces, Security Forces and Reference Companies/Organizations in security industry in an integrated ecosystem. Best In-Use Paper Award at the 2022 Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2022)
The paper “Matching Multiple Ontologies to Build a Knowledge Graph for Personalized Medicine, co-authored by LASIGE’s PhD student Marta Silva, and integrated researchers Daniel Faria and Cátia Pesquita was awarded Best In-Use Paper at ESWC 22. The Best In-Use Paper Award recognizes the merits of research on semantic technologies in real-world settings. More details here.

Top performance at the LitCoin NLP Challenge
The team LASIGE Unicage, composed of Francisco Couto, Diana Sousa, and Pedro Ruas, achieved 7th place (out of 232 participants and 455 submissions) in the LitCoin NLP Challenge. The challenge is part of the NASA Tournament Lab. It is hosted by the American government  agencies The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) and Te National Library of Medicine (NLM). More details here.

2021

Top performance at the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI) 2021
The ontology alignment software AgreementMakerLight (AML), developed at LASIGE (Francisco Couto and Cátia Pesquita) in collaboration with the University of Illinois, has, once again, achieved the top performance at the OAEI 2021, ranking 1st in 7 out of 9 ontology matching tracks.

Top 5 at the H-INNOVA – HEALTH INNOVATION Award competition
LASIGE’s MSc student Ricardo Carvalho, under the supervision of LASIGE’s researchers Daniela Oliveira and Cátia Pesquita, entered the H-INNOVA Award competition achieving the top 5 position among more than 170 competitors worldwide. H-INNOVA acknowledges and awards the best projects developed by students and doctorates that contribute with innovative ideas to specific areas related with Health, with a focus on projects that show knowledge transfer potential.

Best Poster Award at the 2021 Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2021)
LASIGE’s PhD student Rita Sousa, and researchers Sara Silva and Cátia Pesquita poster titled “evoKGsim+ A framework for tailoring Knowledge Graph-based similarity for supervised learning” was awarded Best Poster at ESWC 2021. 

Prof. C. V. Ramamoorthy Best Paper Award at the 40th International Symposium on Reliable Distributed Systems (SRDS 2021)
The paper “Making Reads in BFT State Machine Replication Fast, Linearizable, and Live” co-authored by LASIGE’s researcher Alysson Bessani and researchers Hans P. Reiser and Christian Berger (both, Universität Passau) was awarded the Prof. C. V. Ramamoorthy Best Paper Award at SRSD 2021. 

Most Cited Paper Award of IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing (TAC) 2021
The paper “Emotions Recognition Using EEG Signals: A Survey” by LASIGE’s PhD student Soraia Alarcão and LASIGE’s researcher Manuel J. Fonseca received the Most Cited Paper Award of TAC, for the July 2019 – June 2021 period.

MaxData Informatics Award of Excellence for a PhD student
LASIGE’s Fernando Alves was awarded the MaxData Informatics Award of Excellence for a PhD student. The award is given annually to FCUL’s Department of Informatics students and concerns the previous academic year, in this case 2019/2020. The award was presented at Ciências ULisboa anniversary cerimony. Additional information is available here.

 

FCiências.ID Award for PhD Theses of Excellence
LASIGE’s former PhD student and, currently, researcher André Rodrigues was one of the winners of the FCiências.ID Award for PhD Theses of Excellence. FCiências.ID distinguishes every year one PhD thesis from each one of FCUL’s PhD programmes, and Rodrigues’ thesis was selected in the field of Computer Science and Engineering. International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Service Award 2021
LASIGE’s researcher Ana Respício was awarded the IFIP Service Award for “outstanding contributions to IFIP and the Informatics Community” in recognition of service to IFIP Working Group 8.3 on Decision Support (TC8), since 2010, of which she is vice-chair (2014-2023). The distinction is awarded annually by IFIP’s General Assembly to recognize the active role played by the recipient at an IFIP body or in the organization of an important IFIP event.

Test-of-Time Award at the 51st Annual IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN-2021)
The paper “OS diversity for intrusion tolerance: Myth or reality?” co-authored by LASIGE’s (at the time) MSc student Miguel Garcia Henriques and LASIGE’s researchers Alysson Bessani and Nuno Neves, and published at DSN-2011, was awarded the DSN-2021 Test-of-Time Award. The paper was also co-authored by Ilir Gashi (City, University of London) and Rafael Obelheiro (Santa Catarina State University). The Test-of-Time Award was instituted in 2019 to recognize two papers published in the previous 10-12 years, at the conference in the regular paper category, that have had a sustained and important impact on the theory and/or practice of dependable systems and networks computing research. 

Appointment as Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance (IEEE TCFT)
Nuno Neves was elected Chair of IEEE TCFT for the 2021-2022 period. The TCFCT provides a forum for the exchange of ideas in the technical field of dependable computing. It is aimed at identifying and integrating approaches for specifying, designing, building, assessing, validating, operating and maintaining computer systems where faults are considered as natural, anticipated events, and thus, can be tolerated. Nuno Neves was Vice-Chair of the organisation in the two previous years.

Best Paper Award at ACM ISS 2020
The paper “Collaborative Tabletops for Blind People: The Effect of Auditory Design on Workspace Awareness”, co-authored by LASIGE researcher João Guerreiro, won the Best Paper Award at the 2020 ACM Interactive Surfaces and Spaces Conference (ACM ISS2020), held virtually, in Lisbon, November, 8-11, 2020.

LASIGE’s MSc students awarded merit scholarships by Ciências ULisboa
Diana SousaRobin Vassantlal and Rita Sousa were awarded merit scholarships for their exceptional academic performance in the 2018/2019 academic year. Diana Sousa was curricular classifications was the best of the Ciências ULisboa student universe. Robin Vassantlal had the 5th best classification, followed by Rita Sousa in 7th place.

Best Paper Honorable Mention at ACM IMX 2020: Interactive Media Experiences
The paper “Conceptualizing Augmented Reality Television for the Living Room”, co-authored by LASIGE researcher Teresa Chambel won a Best Paper Honorable Mention at ACM IMX 2020 – International Conference on Interactive Media Experiences.

Sara Silva re-elected at the Executive Board of SPECIES Society
Sara Silva, LASIGE integrated member, was re-elected member of the Executive Board of the SPECIES Society, for one more year (2020/2021).SPECIES is the Society for the Promotion of Evolutionary Computation in Europe and its Surroundings and since 1998 that has been organizing and supporting the EvoStar Conferences. It aims to promote evolutionary algorithmic thinking within Europe and wider, and more generally to promote inspiration of parallel algorithms derived from natural processes.

Best Poster Award at ESWC 2020
Carlota CardosoRita Sousa and Cátia Pesquita were co-awarded the Best Poster Award at the 2020 Extended Semantic Web Conference. Their work, “ A Collection of Benchmark data sets for Knowledge Graph-based Similarity in the Biomedical Domain”, was a collaboration with Sebastian Köhler of Monarch Initiative (and a past visiting researcher at LASIGE) and is integrated in LASIGE’s Research Line of Excellence in Health and Biomedical Informatics.

Alysson Bessani was keynote speaker at FAB’2020
Alysson Bessani gave one the keynotes for the 3rd International Symposium on Foundations and Applications of Blockchain (FAB’2020), organized by the University of California, Santa Cruz, May,2020. It was entitled “From Byzantine Replication to Blockchains: Consensus is Only the Beginning,” and summarised several recent works from LASIGE on Byzantine fault tolerance and blockchains.

FCiências.ID Award recognizes the Excelence of André Lamúrias’ PhD thesis
André Lamúrias, LASIGE integrated member, was awarded by FCiências.ID for the Excelence of his PhD thesis “Development of a text mining approach to disease network discovery”, completed in 2019.This award recognizes exclusively, since 2019, doctoral theses of proven excellence from graduate students of the 3rd cycle of FCUL completed in the previous calendar year and was presented on the Ciências ULisboa anniversary ceremony.

Maxdata recognizes research work of LASIGE’s PhD student André Rodrigues
Every year MaxData acknowledges the best student of each of Department of Informatics courses. The award is presented on the Ciências ULisboa anniversary ceremony. André Rodrigues’ research accomplishments on the 2018/2019 academic period was distinguished with the MaxData Informatic Excellence award for a PhD student.

This year Ciências ULisboa celebrates its 109th anniversary. The occasion was marked by an official ceremony that took place on April 22, remotely. “Carrier-pigeon Robot: Promoting Interactions Among Older Adults in a Care Home”, the late-breaking work of Hugo Simão, David Gonçalves, Ana Pires, and Tiago Guerreiro, LASIGE researchers, won a Best Paper Award at ACM/IEEE Human-Robot Interaction.

Teresa Chambel and Pedro Carvalho win Best Paper Award in Human-Computer Interaction at HUCAPP 2020
The paper “Memorable and Emotional Media Moments: Reminding Yourself of the Good Things!”, co-authored by Teresa Chambel and Pedro Carvalho, won the Best Paper Award at HUCAPP 2020 “International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction Theory and Applications” @ VISIGRAPP, Valletta, Malta, Feb 27-29, 2020.

2019

Naercio Magaia receives Best PhD Student from INESC-ID
During INESC-ID Christmas meeting, our integrated researcher Naercio Magaia was awarded the INESC-ID 2019 Best PhD Student.

Best Student Paper Award at ACM/IFIP Middleware 19
The paper “Lazarus: Automatic Management of Diversity in BFT Systems”; co-authored by Miguel Garcia (a recently graduated PhD from LASIGE), Nuno Neves and Alysson Bessani, won the Best Student Paper Award at ACM/IFIP Middleware 19 Conference, UC Davis, CA, United States, 9-13 December, 2019.

H2020 OpenMinTED initiative awarded LASIGE work
The H2020 OpenMinTED initiative awarded an open tender to a team that included LASIGE members André LamúriasDiana Sousa and Francisco Couto, for building a Deep Learning model that classifies relations between entities using contextual information and biomedical ontologies. The work was also published in the international high impact BMC Bioinformatics journal.

2nd place at MIUP’19
The 0xC0D1F1ED team, composed by two LASIGE junior researchers: Guilherme EspadaFábio Colaço and Sara Queimado, won the second place at the Inter-University Programming Marathon [Maratona Inter-Universitária de Programação] MIUP’19. It was held at 12th October, 2019, in Lisboa, Portugal.

Best Student Paper Award at KDD’19
The paper “Predicting assisted ventilation in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis using a mixture of experts and conformal predictors”, authored by the LASIGE researchers Telma PereiraSofia Pires, Marta Gromicho, Susana Pinto, Mamede de Carvalho and Sara C. Madeira, won the prize for the Best Student Paper Award at KDD’19, the 25th ACM SIGKDD Conference on knowledge discovery and data mining, which took place between August 04 to 08, 2019, in Anchorage, Alaska.

Tiago Guerreiro appointed as ACM TACCESS Editor-in-Chief
Tiago Guerreiro, LASIGE researcher and coordinator of the “Accessibility & Ageing” research line of excellence, has been appointed as ACM Transactions on Accessible Computing (TACCESS) Editor-in-Chief, together with Stephanie Ludi (University of North Texas). The appointment starts on August 1 for a tenure of 3 years.

Catia Pesquita is Associate Editor at BMC Bioinformatics
Cátia Pesquita was appointed Associate Editor for BMC Bioinformatics, a top open-access journal in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (Top 10% SJR and h5-index=61), in the Machine learning and artificial intelligence subject area.

António Casimiro is the new Ada User Journal (AUJ) Editor-in-Chief
António Casimiro was appointed as the new Ada User Journal (AUJ) Editor-in-Chief. The Ada User Journal is a quarterly journal produced by Ada-Europe. Its aim is to inform readers of developments in the Ada programming language and its use, general Ada-related software engineering issues and Ada-related activities. 

Winner of Carter Award (DSN 2019) by a LASIGE PhD Thesis
LASIGE post-doc researcher João Sousa has been announced as the winner of the DSN 2019 William C. Carter award for his dissertation on “Byzantine state machine replication for the masses”.

ETAPS Test of Time Award 2019
The paper “Language Primitives and Type Discipline for Structured Communication-Based Programming”, from Vasco Vasconcelos, co-authored with Kohei Honda and Makoto Kubo, won the ETAPS Test of Time Award. ETAPS Awards Committee recognizes outstanding papers published more than 10 years in the past in one of the constituent conferences of ETAPS. The Award recognises the impact of excellent research results that have been published at ETAPS.

Best project at Pixels Camp 2019
The project “Salazar”, authored by the LASIGE researcher Alcides Fonseca and his team, was considered, by the total of participants and jury members, the Best Project at Pixels Camp 2019. This event gathers developers from all over Europe stop their lives for 3 days, to work on a project and feel the adrenaline of presenting it to over 1250 fellow programmers, during a 48h programming competition. It was held between March 21 to 24, 2019, in Lisboa, Portugal.

1st place at ACM/IEE HRI 2019 Video Competition
The video “Exploring Collaborative Interactions Between Robots and Blind People”, authored, among others, by the LASIGE researchers Tiago Guerreiro and André Rodrigues, won the first place at the video competition at HRI 2019, the 14th International Conference on Human Robot Interaction, which took place between March 11 to 14, 2019, in Daegu, Korea.

1st place at Google Hascode national qualifying round 2019
On the 28th of February, 2019, Google held the qualifying round globally through the internet. The best score from Portugal was obtained by “Caracóis Hipercondríacos”, a team that features three LASIGE junior researchers: Guilherme EspadaNuno Burnay and Robin Vassantlal.

Scientifc Prizes 2018 at University of Lisbon
The University of Lisbon Scientific Prizes’ jury have awarded Francisco Couto with the Prize at 2018 awards, in the area of Computer Science and Computer Engineering, recognizing his published work between 2013 and 2017. The prizes, instituted by the University of Lisbon in collaboration with Caixa Geral de Depósitos, aim to reward the scientific research activity and to encourage the publication in international journals of recognized quality.

Nuno Neves was elected as Vice-Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance (TCFT), for the period (march) 2019-2020.

Teresa Chambel was reelected as Vice President of the ACM TVX Steering Committee, for the period (june) 2019-2020.

Best Paper Award at DMSVIVA’18
The paper “Where do People Look while Identifying Colors in Images”, authored by the LASIGE researchers Manuel FonsecaSoraia Meneses Alarcão and Ruben Pavão, won the first prize for the Best Paper Award at DMSVIVA’18, the 24th International DMS Conference on Visualization and Visual Languages, which took place between June 29 to 30, 2018, in San Francisco Bay, USA.

Top performance in several tracks of the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative 2018
The ontology alignment software AgreementMakerLight(AML), developed at LASIGE in collaboration with the U. of Illinois, has achieved the top performance in several tracks of the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative 2018.

Best Communication Paper Award at Web4All2018
The paper “Semantic Content Analysis Supporting Web Accessibility Evaluation”, authored by the LASIGE researchers Carlos DuarteInês Matos and Luís Carriço, won the Best Communication Paper Award at Web4All 2018, the 15th International Cross-Disciplinary Conference on Web Accessibility, which took place between April 23 to 25, in Lyon, France.

Honorable Mention at University of Lisbon Scientific Prizes
The University of Lisbon Scientific Prizes’ jury have awarded Francisco Couto with a Honorable Mention at 2017 awards. The prizes, instituted by the University of Lisbon in collaboration with Caixa Geral de Depósitos, aim to reward the scientific research activity and to encourage the publication in international journals of recognized quality.

IBM Research Prize for Instance Matching at OAEI 2017
The AML development team from LASIGE is the winner of the 2017 IBM Research prize, awarded for the most complete and competitive tool across the OAEI 2017 instance matching tracks: Process Model Matching, Instance Matching, and HOBBIT Link Discovery. Besides the award, the AML also ranked 1st in 7 out of 9 tracks.

Notable Article @ Computing Reviews’ 21st Annual Best of Computing list
The Computing Reviews’ 21st Annual Best of Computing list selected LASIGE’s publication “Snooping on mobile phones: prevalence and trends” as a notable article in computing in 2016. The article, presented at the USENIX 12th Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security (SOUPS 2016), was a collaboration result between researchers from LASIGE and University of British Columbia (Canada), and received the “Distinguished Paper Award” of the event along with a quite amount of media attention from the international press. Best Student Paper Award at CCGRID 2017
The LASIGE members Pedro Sá da Costa and Fernando Ramos, in joint work with Miguel Correia (IST-UL), have won the Best Student Paper Award in CCGRID 2017 – 17th IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster, Cloud and Grid Computing, with their work entitled Chrysaor: Fine-Grained, Fault-Tolerant Cloud-of-Clouds MapReduce.

2016

IBM Faculty Award 2016 granted to Alysson Bessani
The competitive IBM Faculty award, was granted to Alysson Bessani. This prize is awarded to Professors from the best Universities around the world, who are suggested by IBM Research investigators and then assessed internally at the company.

LaSIGE won the EDP re:dy Challenge 2016
LaSIGE’s team won the 2016 edition of the EDP re: dy challenge. The team, constitued by Pedro Ferreira and Fernando Alves, also had the collaboration of Professor Antonio Ruano of University of Algarve.

Distinguished Paper Award at SOUPS 2016
The article “Snooping on Mobile Phones: Prevalence and Trends” with authorship of LaSIGE’s researchers, Diogo Marques, Tiago Guerreiro and Luis Carriço, in collaboration with researchers from the University of British Columbia, Canada, received the “Distinguished Paper Award ” at SOUPS conference (Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security), which took place in June 22-24, in Denver, Colorado, USA. The work has also received a quite degree of media attention from the international press, taking as examples:

Honorable Mention Award at MobileHCI 2016 The article “Effect of Target Size on Non-Visual Text-Entry” with authorship of the LaSIGE’s researchers, André Rodrigues, Tiago Guerreiro and Luis Carriço, in collaboration with researchers from the Instituto Superior Técnico (Univ. of Lisbon) and School of Computing Science (Newcastle Univ.), received an “Honorable Mention Award” at MobileHCI 2016 conference that took place September 6th to 9th, at Florence, Italy.

The presentation by Fernando Ramos, with the title “Blending Photons with Electrons to Reduce the Energy Footprint of IPTV Networks” received 2nd place at Audience Award of the “One-Minute Madness Session” of this year edition of IFIP Networking Conference, held at Vienna, Austria, from May 17 to 19, 2016.

Poster Presentation Award at EuroSys 2016
The poster “Efficient Storage of Whole Human Genomes”, by Vinicius Cogo and Alysson Bessani was distinguished with the the Poster Presentation Award at EuroSys 2016, held in London, UK, from April 18th to 21st, 2016.

1st place at Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative 2016
The AML system, by LASIGE researchers Cátia PesquitaFrancisco Couto and Catarina Martins, in collaboration with researchers from Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (Portugal), University of Illinois at Chicago (USA) and INESC-ID (Portugal) ranked first at OAEI 2016 – Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative, that organises evaluation campaigns aiming at evaluating ontology matching technologies. The initiative results were presented at OM 2016 – The Eleventh International Workshop on Ontology Matching, collocated with the ISWC’16 – 15th International Semantic Web Conference, October 18th, 2016, Kobe, Japan.

Challenge award at BioASQ
The LASIGE | ULisboa team, composed by Miguel RodriquesMiguel Falé and Francisco Couto was awarded at the 4th edition of the BioASQ Challenge – A challenge on large-scale biomedical semantic indexing and question answering, that took place in 2016. The challenges include tasks relevant to hierarchical text classification, machine learning, information retrieval, QA from texts and structured data, multi-document summarization and many other areas.

Best Paper Award at ACM ITS 2015
The paper “Blind People Interacting with Large Touch Surfaces: Strategies for One-handed and Two-handed Exploration”, by Tiago Guerreiro, Kyle Montague, João Guerreiro, Rafael NunesHugo Nicolau and Daniel Gonçalves, was distinguished with the Best Paper Award at ACM ITS 2015 – Interactive Tabletops and Surfaces, ranked with CORE A and h-5 index = 24, held at Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, from November 15th to 18th.

Best Student Paper Award at INForum 2015
Radu Onica won the Best Student Paper Award at INFórum 2015 – Simpósio de Informática, held in Covilhã, Portugal, September 7-8, 2015. The prize , sponsored by MaxData, was awarded to the article Fault-Tolerant Precision Time Protocol for Smart Grids, by Radu OnicaNuno Neves and António Casimiro. INForum 2015 Prize announcement: Joana Velho, another researcher from LaSIGE was in list of nominated for the award, with the article Physical Intrusion Detection for Android Smartphones by Joana VelhoDiogo MarquesTiago Guerreiro and Luís Carriço.

Winning team at Process Model Matching EMISA 2015
A team of LaSIGE and INESC-ID researchers is one of the winners of the Process Model Matching at EMISA 2015 – 6th International Workshop on Enterprise Modelling and Information Systems Architectures. The team led by Cátia Pesquita developed an extension for LaSIGE’s awarded ontology matching system, AML, to extend its use to Enterprise Architecture Models. EMISA 2015, was co-located with the 13th International Conference on Business Process Management (BPM 2015). Both events were hosted by the University of Innsbruck and BPM Research Cluster, and took take place in Innsbruck, Austria, from September 3rd-4th and August 31st – September 3rd respectively.

Best Paper Award at ICBO 2015 Conference
The Best Early Career Paper Award at the International Conference on Biomedical Ontology 2015, held in Lisbon (July 27-30), was awarded to Catarina Martins, Ernesto Jimenez-Ruiz, Emanuel Santos and Catia Pesquita. The paper, with the title “Towards visualizing the mapping incoherences in Bioportal”, is a collaboration between LaSIGE researchers and Oxford University. The award was sponsored by PeerJ.

Notable Article @ Computing Reviews’ 19th Annual Best of Computing list The Computing Reviews’ 19th Annual Best of Computing list, announced in 2015, selected the publication “The stream-based service-centred calculus: a foundation for service-oriented programming” as a notable article in computing in 2014. XLDB team with top result at OAEI 2014
The AML system developed by XLDB obtained first place in all of the 6 tasks it has proposed for competition (out of a total of 9 tasks) at the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI 2014), presented at OM 2014 – International Workshop on Ontology Matching collocated with ISWC 2014 – International Semantic Web Conference, that took place at Riva del Garda, Italy, from October 19th to 23rd, 2014.

Best Paper Award at ACM CHI 2014 Conference
LASIGE researcher Tiago Guerreiro was distinguished with a “Best Paper Award” at ACM CHI 2014, to happen in Toronto, Canada, April 2014, with the paper “B#: Chord-based Correction for Multitouch Braille Input”. CHI, a Core A* conference, is the second largest ACM conference and the major conference on Human-Computer Interaction.

2013

XLDB team with top results at OAEI 2013 and DREAM 8
The AML system developed by XLDB obtained top results in the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI 2013). XLDB also obtained high scores in all the evaluation criteria at the NIEHS-NCATS-UNC DREAM8 Toxicogenetics Challenge.

Best Paper Award at MidSens’2012 Workshop
Prof. Hugo Miranda was distinguished with a “Best Paper Award at MidSens ’12 7th International Workshop on Middleware Tools, Services and Run-Time Support for Sensor Networks, co-located with Middleware 2012 Conference, held at Montreal, Quebec, Canada, from December 3rd to 7th, 2012, with the paper “PAMPA in the wild: a real-life evaluation of a lightweight ad-hoc broadcasting family”, co-authored with Christopher Winstanley, Rajiv Ramdhany, François Taïani and Barry Porter.

LASIGE researchers won “Best Paper Award” at IEEE CloudCom’11, held at Athens Greece, from November 29th to December 1st, 2011, with the paper “Byzantine Fault-Tolerant MapReduce: Faults are Not Just Crashes”, by Pedro Costa, Marcelo Pasin, Alysson Bessani and Miguel Correia.

Prof. Alysson Bessani was distinguished with the “Best Paper Award” on the SBRC 2009 – 27th Brazilian Symposium on Computer Networks and Distributed Systems with the paper “Sistemas de Quóruns Bizantinos Pró-Ativos” co-authored with Eduardo Alchieri, Joni da Silva Fraga and Fernando Pereira.

Prof. Paulo Veríssimo named ACM Fellow – 2009
Professor Paulo Verissimo, faculty of FCUL and Director of LaSIGE, has been named ACM Fellow, 2009. According to ACM, the ACM Fellowship is awarded for «outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology, and/or outstanding service to ACM and the larger computing community». After having been named IEEE Fellow in 2007, this recognition confirms his contributions to dependable and secure distributed computing.

Henrique Moniz, LASIGE PhD student, was distinguished with the “Best Student Paper Award” at the 23rd International Symposium on Distributed Computing (DISC 2009) with the paper Randomization Can Be a Healer: Consensus with Dynamic Omission Failures, Authors: Henrique Moniz, Nuno F. Rui Lopes and his advisor Prof. Luís Carriço, both LaSIGE researchers, have been distinguished with the best paper award at the W4A’08 – International Cross-Disciplinary Conference on Web Accessibility, for their work on The impact of accessibility assessment in macro scale universal usability studies of the web.

Paulo Sousa, LaSIGE PhD researcher, was distinguished with the IBM 2007 Scientific Award, with the work “Security and Availability through Proactive Resilience”.

Prof. Paulo Veríssimo – Elevation to IEEE Fellow – 2007
The IEEE – Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers board of Directors had selected Prof. Paulo Veríssimo to one of the Institute’s most prestigious honors, elevation to IEEE fellow, with the following citation: “for contributions to dependable and secure distributed computing”.

Best Young Researcher paper award – ECDL2006 The paper by Daniel Gomes, Sérgio Freitas and Mário J. Silva, “Design and Selection Criteria for a National Web Archive”, was distinguished with the Best Young Paper Award at ECDL2006 conference, held in Alicante, Spain in September 2006.

European Descartes Science Prize 2004
The project Malicious and Accidental Fault Tolerance for Internet Applications – MAFTIA was one of the European Descartes Science Prize 2004 finalists where it earned an Honorable Mention. Prof. Paulo Veríssimo, was the leader of the LASIGE team involved in the project.

IBM 2004 Scientific Award
The LASIGE senior researcher Nuno Ferreira Neves earned the IBM 2004 Scientific Award with a work on the area of intrusion tolerant systems.

Inovation Young Engineer 2004
The LASIGE researcher Francisco Couto earned the Inovation Young Engineer 2004 Prize gave by Ordem dos Engenheiros (Portuguese Engineers Guild) with a work about Automatic identification of evidence text in scientific literature that substantiate protein annotations.
